Wuhan's Autumn Raptor Passage Reaches Mid-Season: Watching Red-footed Falcons, Buzzards and Sparrowhawks

Jimu News reported on September 16, citing the Wuhan Birdwatching Association, that southbound passage is in its middle phase and the raptor peak usually arrives in late September. This guide separates early 2026 sightings from the complete 2025 baseline and covers skyline watching, silhouette identification and low-impact records.

Early 2026 observations versus a complete baseline

The report says the Wuhan Birdwatching Association has begun its autumn survey and recorded scattered Eastern Marsh Harriers and Red-footed Falcons in early September. The main passage is still expected later, with the usual peak in late September. These are early observations, not a basis for predicting the season total.

For context, the report gives a complete 2025 baseline: 4,153 diurnal raptors of 22 species over 54 survey days, led by 1,599 Red-footed Falcons, 657 Common Buzzards and 458 Japanese Sparrowhawks. Last year's ranking helps observers study likely silhouettes; it is not a live 2026 count.

Separating three silhouettes over the city

A Red-footed Falcon is slim with pointed wings and alternates light wingbeats with glides. A Common Buzzard has broad wings and a relatively short tail, producing a heavier soaring profile. A Japanese Sparrowhawk is small, with short rounded wings and a longer tail, often using rapid wingbeats followed by a brief glide. Backlight makes colour unreliable, so begin with shape, proportions and flight style.

High raptors often shrink to dots and change apparent shape as they bank. When evidence is insufficient, record 'falcon', 'buzzard' or 'small accipiter', retain a sequence of images and note the time. An honest higher-level identification is more useful than a forced species entry.

Joining the passage watch without disrupting it

Use a legally open public space with a broad skyline and scan from one position. Do not drive along ridges, enter closed woodland or ask monitors for a roost or favoured perch. Binoculars are efficient for searching and a telephoto lens can preserve silhouettes; a drone must never approach a migrating stream.

Record start and end time, weather, wind, a count range and direction, and keep current observations separate from last year's totals. Share only city- or hill-area locality, obey fire controls and temporary closures, and allow volunteer monitoring to take priority over a personal camera position.
