Over 100 Daurian Jackdaws Circle above Hualong Lake: Identifying and Counting a Moving Flock

Wenshan News reported on October 7 that a photographer saw more than 100 birds circling near Hualong Lake, Wenshan City, on October 5; the report identified them from images and observed characters as Daurian Jackdaws. This guide covers adult and juvenile plumage, separation from Rooks and other corvids, and block counting of moving flocks. The published identification does not make every distant image diagnostic.

Why a flock of more than 100 still needs an identification process

The report identifies the birds as Daurian Jackdaws from field images and observed characters, but distant dark flocks are easily labelled simply as 'crows.' A credible note records size, formation, calls, tail, wing shape and any visible plumage instead of merely copying a headline.

Daurian Jackdaw is smaller and more buoyant than Large-billed Crow. A classic pale adult has grey-white neck sides and underparts with darker head, breast, wings and tail. Juveniles and dark morphs can look much darker, so combine size, calls and flock comparisons when plumage is unclear.

Separating Rook and Large-billed Crow

Rook is generally larger and longer-winged, with pale bare skin at the bill base in adults. Large-billed Crow is bulky with a deep arched bill, and its spacing and calls often differ. Daurian Jackdaw flocks can circle compactly, but formation alone is not diagnostic.

Look for birds in good light, individuals landing, and scale against buildings or crowns rather than guessing colour from backlit silhouettes. If only high silhouettes are visible, record a corvid flock with video and revise only after stronger evidence.

Count a moving flock without crowding it

Choose a fixed reference line and tally birds in blocks of five or ten as they pass. If the flock circles repeatedly, count one complete passage across the line and label the number an estimate. Two observers can count independently and compare results.

Do not pursue by vehicle, honk, fly a drone or gather beneath a roost tree. Urban flocks can turn suddenly over roads, wires and glass. Stay in safe pedestrian space, never step backward into traffic for a photograph, and delay any live location likely to attract a crowd.
