More than 340 species is a long-term record, not a day list
The figure comes from ten years of photography and reflects river restoration and accumulated habitat diversity. It does not mean 340 species can be seen in one park on one day. Every visit still depends on season, water level, weather and current observations.
Early autumn may bring herons, shorebirds and migrant passerines, followed later by more ducks and coots. Never guarantee a target or chase an accidental rarity.
Choose one section for a day
From Xi’an, select one river section. Urban visitors can use legally open Weihe parks or the Xi’an Lake area; a longer outing can focus on Yangling or Weinan public sites. Crossing several cities wastes the best dawn hours in transit.
The first two hours after sunrise and late afternoon are often productive. Scan open water, then shallows, reed edges and shelterbelts. Move on immediately when works, high water, closure or ranger guidance requires it.
Distance matters in a public park
Use 8–10× binoculars or a telephoto lens from boardwalks and embankments. Do not enter mudflats, cross barriers or cut through reeds. A flock repeatedly raising heads or swimming away signals that you are too close.
Share only park-level locations, never dependable rare-bird points. For children, keep the session to 60–90 minutes with water, sun protection and a quiet observation task.
