What the official update confirms
The September 16 NFGA update says migration season has begun at Ulan Nor, with swans, Grey Herons, Demoiselle Cranes and cormorants resting on shallows and Eurasian Spoonbills and Swan Geese flying and feeding. It provides neither a count nor a species identification for the swans.
A field record should therefore retain 'unidentified swan' with supporting evidence, not convert it to Whooper or Tundra Swan from season or location alone. The report documents a migration gathering; it does not promise that a flock remains in the same place.
Reading structure in a mixed flock
A Demoiselle Crane is slim and long-necked, with contrasting black-and-white head and neck pattern and fine plumes. A Eurasian Spoonbill is pale and defined by a long, flattened spoon-shaped bill. A Swan Goose is large and long-necked, with bill base and head-neck profile useful against other geese. Begin with feeding depth, flock arrangement and flight profile before fine detail.
A Grey Heron retracts its neck in flight, while a crane holds the neck straight; a cormorant shows a long neck and tail with sustained wingbeats. At excessive distance, in heat shimmer or side backlight, retain family or genus level rather than approaching a mixed flock for a rarity claim.
Weather and boundaries at a steppe wetland
Hulunbuir can have a large day-night temperature range in September, and wind or a cold front can rapidly change conditions. Check local forecasts, roads and access notices; carry warm windproof layers, water and offline navigation. Keep vehicles on public roads and out of soft ground, working pasture and wetland edge.
Use a scope from a road or public viewing area and retreat when birds raise their heads, bunch together, move toward open water or take flight. No drones, horns, feeding or live landing pins. Pastoral work, patrols and temporary controls take priority so a refuelling site does not become a viewing scrum.
