Shennongjia Confirms Its First Pheasant-tailed Jacana: Identifying an Immature Autumn Passage Bird without Creating a Chase Site

Shennongjia National Park reported on October 9 that a bird photographed on October 5 was confirmed by experts as an immature Pheasant-tailed Jacana, the park's first record. Because it appeared alone during autumn passage, its current status is provisionally a passage migrant. This guide covers non-breeding plumage, long toes and floating-vegetation behaviour while retaining only region-level locality.

How the first record was established

On October 5, observers photographed a medium-sized waterbird with brown upperparts, mainly white underparts and long legs. It was provisionally identified as Pheasant-tailed Jacana, then reviewed by experts and the park's research institute; the first record was announced on October 9.

The source describes an immature and, because it appeared alone during October passage, provisionally treats it as a passage migrant. 'Provisional' matters: one transient bird is not a stable population or a reliable tourism target.

Do not search only for a long tail

Breeding Pheasant-tailed Jacana has an extravagant tail and golden nape, but an immature or non-breeding bird does not. Better clues are extremely long toes, slim structure, white face, neck and underparts, brown upperparts, and light steps on floating vegetation or shallow edges.

In flight, seek contrast between pale wing coverts and darker flight feathers, but one distant frame can be confused with rails or other waders. Preserve movement, foot placement, toes and wing pattern; weak evidence should remain probable Pheasant-tailed Jacana.

A first record must not create a crowd

This article withholds the discovery section and any later location. Jacanas depend on shallow water and floating vegetation; approach, crowding or repeated flushing drains a migrant's energy. Do not enter water, trample leaves, clear vegetation, use playback, fly a drone or offer food.

For an accidental encounter, record time, weather, broad locality and behaviour from where you stand, collect evidence and leave. Send originals and coordinates privately to the park's research team or a moderated records platform; delay and generalize anything public.
