Shaanxi Yellow Fog Warning Covers Southern Xi’an and the Qinba Mountains: When to Cancel Dawn Birding and How to Log Visibility

At 22:18 on September 29, the Shaanxi Meteorological Observatory continued a yellow fog warning for the next 12 hours, forecasting visibility of 500–1,000 metres and locally below 500 metres in Chang'an, Huyi, Lantian and Zhouzhi in Xi’an and across the Qinba Mountains, among other areas. This guide covers cancelling mountain and waterside outings, switching to open urban sites and recording low-visibility bias.

Change transport and site before doing anything else

The warning's 500–1,000 metres, locally below 500 metres, is an area-level visibility forecast, not a promise of identical conditions on every route. Mountain bends, waterside paths, bridges and hollows can be worse. A dawn drive or walk onto a Qinling side road must not be judged only by visibility at the urban departure point.

During the warning, cancel plans requiring mountain roads, cliff edges, reservoir shores or unmanaged wetlands. If observing at all, use only a daylight-open urban park with clear access, railings and staff, and let the latest official warning and on-site control decide whether to go.

Four stop signals

End the outing if road markings, a vehicle ahead or the path edge is unclear; optics keep fogging; a call cannot be approached at a safe distance; or a group member begins to fall behind. Never cross a barrier, approach water or follow sound into woodland to fill a list.

Drivers should slow down and use legal parking only, never braking suddenly for a bird. Walkers need reflective outerwear, a light and a companion. Obey every closure or turn-back instruction instead of waiting nearby and entering when fog seems thinner.

Keeping low-visibility records usable

Log start and end time, locality only to park or township level, estimated visibility, fog trend, method and effective effort. Mark sound-only records as heard. Leave similar species unresolved and never use playback to force a bird into view.

Fog reduces detection distance and changes the visible species mix, so a shorter list does not mean fewer birds. Note visibility, retain zero and cancelled records, avoid direct comparison with clear-weather samples, and never publish an exact sound source for a sensitive bird.
