What the forecast says—and does not say

The CMA city forecast issued at 20:00 on September 19 showed light rain in Xi'an on the 20th and possible rain on the 21st, with several more wet periods during the week. Hanzhong showed light rain on the 20th–21st and stronger showers around the 23rd. Forecasts update continuously, so this page cannot replace a departure-day check.

Light rain does not make every site safe, nor does it guarantee poor migration. A paved city park and a Qinling gully carry different risks. Decide from rainfall intensity, warnings, visibility, roads and protected-area access together.

Replace mountain targets with lower-risk observation

On wet days prefer managed city parks or formal wetland boardwalks with quick exits, and postpone ridges, gullies and dirt tracks. Around Hanzhong or Yangxian, persistent rain is never a reason to enter farm tracks, muddy riverbanks or village working land for Crested Ibis or another target.

Reduce speed in poor dawn visibility and never stop suddenly on a bridge, bend or shoulder for a bird. Set a clear turnaround point. Thunder, rising water, falling rocks, dense fog, a road closure or loss of stable phone signal should each trigger immediate retreat.

Rain equipment and field records

Carry a hooded waterproof shell, grippy shoes, lens cover, dry bag and spare warm layer. Umbrellas obstruct sightlines on paths and in groups and are not a substitute for rainwear. Do not use a high tripod in thunder or stand beside isolated trees or water.

Birds may feed intensely after rain, but that never justifies pursuit. Stay on paths, listen before looking, and solve low light with support or camera settings rather than distance. Record the forecast issue time and field weather so later interpretation includes observer conditions.
