Separate an education event from a sighting bulletin
The September 18 event involved forestry staff, researchers, volunteers, media and schools, with expert talks, a visit to a biodiversity interpretation centre for the Lingbao section of the Yellow River and outdoor birding. The report was published on September 21.
It gives no species list, count, exact observation point or continuing public programme. Reliable reporting preserves those blanks: do not guess birds from event photographs or turn one organized activity into an always-available itinerary.
Five elements of a reviewable field note
Record the date and time span; a county- or public-park-level area; a count range rather than false precision; behaviour such as feeding, resting, flight or vigilance; and context including weather, water, noise, people, vehicles and any flushing.
When evidence is weak, write 'unidentified duck', 'unidentified heron' or 'medium-sized shorebird' and retain photographs, call descriptions and distance for later review. Zero counts, uncertain records and common species remain useful; never fill a list with birds absent from the source.
Turn education into protection, not a check-in
Prefer interpretation centres, legal trails and fixed facilities and verify hours, reservations and water conditions. Use binoculars or a scope; do not enter flats, cross barriers, approach flocks or flush birds for children's photographs.
Strip coordinates from public posts and delay and generalize any sensitive or scarce record. School and family groups can assign quiet counts, behaviour notes and litter removal so the visit leaves reviewable information rather than disturbance.
