Nearly 1,000 Raptors over Qingdao’s Fushan in Two Days: Counting Black Kites, Oriental Honey-buzzards and Japanese Sparrowhawks

Qingdao Morning Post reported on October 8 that the Qingdao Birdwatching Society’s Fushan station counted 423 raptors of 15 species on October 4 and 615 on October 5. A cold front and northwesterly winds temporarily shifted the route eastward. This article explains silhouettes, block counts and weather dependence without disclosing monitoring positions or live locations of rare eagles.

Why the two-day total cannot be projected onto today

On October 4 the station counted 423 raptors of 15 species, including 125 Black Kites and 86 Oriental Honey-buzzards. October 5 produced 615, including 215 Black Kites, 121 honey-buzzards and 86 Japanese Sparrowhawks. The totals mark a weather-driven peak under a cold front and northwesterly wind, not a daily promise.

The source also reports small numbers of Greater Spotted Eagle, Booted Eagle and Besra. Such rarities require image sequences, time records and expert review; a high dark speck or social-media screenshot is not enough for a definite identification.

Silhouette first, then block counting

Black Kite has long wings and a shallowly forked tail. Oriental Honey-buzzard is broad-winged with a relatively protruding head and highly variable plumage. Japanese Sparrowhawk is smaller, with short rounded wings, a long tail and rapid flaps followed by glides. In backlight, record proportions and flight rhythm before colour.

For a stream of migrants, count in blocks of five or ten and record start and end time, direction, wind and circling birds. Conservatively remove a bird that may have re-entered the field of view. Keep unresolved birds as unidentified raptors rather than inflating a species total.

Give long-term monitoring priority over personal positions

This page withholds the exact station. Use only public trails and legal viewpoints, keep monitoring sightlines open, do not request live directions to a rarity, and never cross fire, construction or conservation barriers.

No drones, flushing horns or playback, and do not block a summit path with equipment. Strong wind, rain, fog and lightning reduce identification quality while increasing fall risk. Descending in deteriorating weather matters more than waiting for a target.
