What the official monitoring tells us

The NFGA report dated August 31 says Common Redshanks have arrived at the Minjiang Estuary during early autumn migration. As falling water exposes mud, the birds feed on molluscs, small shrimp and worms to rebuild energy for the journey south. The estuary is described as a key refuelling point on the East Asian–Australasian Flyway.

The report marks the start of the season; it does not promise the same number at the same place each day. Flocks shift with tide, wind, rain, disturbance and food. Check current access and weather before travel.

Identifying Common Redshank

This medium-sized wader usually shows orange-red to red legs and a fairly straight bill with red at the base. It walks briskly through shallows and soft mud. In flight, look for a clear white trailing edge to the wing and a white rump, but never rely on leg colour alone at distance or in backlight.

Common Greenshank is generally larger, greyer-green-legged and longer-billed, with the bill slightly upturned. A combination of size, leg colour, bill shape, flight pattern and call is more reliable than forcing a close photograph.

Follow the tide, not the flock

Use official trails, hides or embankments and scan with binoculars or a scope. Birds spread across exposed mud on a falling tide and move toward higher ground as water rises. Never cross barriers, walk onto tidal flats or follow the waterline toward them.

Do not fly a drone, honk, feed or use playback. Retreat if birds repeatedly raise their heads, stop feeding or leave as a group. Share only estuary-level locations, not a live pin for a dependable roost or feeding patch.
