How Hainan's first record was established

The NFGA reported on September 8 that one or two Brown-breasted Flycatchers were documented in woodland at Haikou's Baishamen Park and described by a specialist as Hainan's first confirmed record. The report notes that southbound migration is under way and mixed urban woodland provides stopover habitat.

A first record requires reviewable images, date, habitat and expert assessment. Later visitors must not treat one observation as a daily guarantee or force a small bird into view through crowding, branch removal or prolonged staking out.

Identification points

Brown-breasted Flycatcher is a small flycatcher with a dark-brown forehead and crown, conspicuous white eye-ring and pale buff wash along the breast sides. It often perches quietly in dense lower woodland, makes a short insect-catching flight and returns nearby.

Other passage flycatchers can be confusing in poor light. Record eye-ring completeness, breast tone, wing pattern, bill shape, posture and voice together; do not infer an identity from location when the photograph is inadequate.

A rarity must not become a pressure point

Spread out on open park paths, keep access clear, stay out of shrubs and use no playback, insects or pursuit. Find the bird with binoculars before using a telephoto lens, then leave space after a short observation.

Do not live-share the exact tree, perch or direction of movement. If a crowd grows or the bird repeatedly hides or stops feeding, increase distance or leave. Temporary park controls and staff instructions take priority.
