What is new in Guangdong
The NFGA reported on September 8 that a Zhuhai monitoring team had documented the province's first complete Glossy Ibis cycle from nesting and chick-rearing to fledging. The monitored population reached 12; chicks were recorded in May and two had completed moult and followed adults to forage by mid-July.
This is a research and conservation result, not an opening notice for the breeding site. The article intentionally limits location to Zhuhai wetland and rice-field habitat; visitors should watch only from public paths and legal viewpoints.
Identifying adults and young
Adults can appear almost black at distance, but good light reveals chestnut, green, bronze and violet gloss. A long down-curved bill and slim profile are important. Young birds are duller in plumage and bare parts, so 'dark waterbird' is not enough for an identification.
In backlight, at distance or in mixed flocks, record size, bill shape, leg length, flight outline and repeated behaviour. Leave an uncertain bird unidentified rather than approaching or chasing for a rare record.
Protection continues after fledging
Official monitoring followed a no-approach, no-disturbance and no-drone rule, using distant telephoto work. Visitors should likewise avoid reeds and concealed vegetation, never surround families and never use food, live bait, playback or drones.
Label photographs only at city or habitat level, remove precise geotags and delay publication. If you encounter a suspected nest area or injured young bird, do not gather or capture it; report the broad area to local forestry or wildlife rescue professionals.
