Birding Guangdong's September–November Passage: Pacific Golden Plover, Greater Sand Plover, Black-tailed Godwit and Spoon-billed Sandpiper

An official Guangdong Forestry guide published in October 2025 identifies September–November as the annual passage peak and lists major shorebirds and protected species. This remains useful seasonal guidance, but its 2025 counts, sites and individual records are not presented as live 2026 sightings.

Separate an older source from this season's plan

The official guide says early migrants normally reach Guangdong from August and passage peaks from September through November. It lists Pacific Golden Plover, sand plovers, Long-toed Stint, Red-necked Phalarope and Black-tailed Godwit among early groups, with more shorebirds, spoonbills, storks, geese and ducks later.

The article was published on October 20, 2025. Its estimate of more than 300,000 birds and record of two Spoon-billed Sandpipers belong to that season, not live 2026 conditions. A 2026 visit requires current access, tide, weather and monitoring notices.

Four clues from body and bill

Pacific Golden Plover is compact with golden-brown spotting in non-breeding plumage. Greater Sand Plover has a large head and heavy bill with relatively long legs. Black-tailed Godwit is larger with a long, nearly straight bill, black tail and white wingbar in flight. Spoon-billed Sandpiper is tiny, with a distinctly expanded bill tip.

Distance, heat haze and moult distort shape and colour. A suspected Spoon-billed Sandpiper needs a sequence of clear images, behaviour and expert review; one blurred frame is insufficient. 'Unidentified stint' is more responsible than a false rarity alert.

Watch the tide without following the waterline

Wait in a formal hide, on a boardwalk or public embankment and let the tide bring birds into scope range. Do not enter flats, push through mangroves, use aquaculture banks or flush a flock for flight shots. Migrants need uninterrupted feeding.

Do not live-share an exact rare-bird position. Strip coordinates and delay public posts. A flock raising its heads, moving away or taking flight shows that disturbance has begun; retreat immediately and obey every closure and ranger instruction.
