A seasonal changeover between sea and mountain

Liaoning's forestry authority reported on September 10 that Dalian launched an autumn protection action for the Yellow Sea–Bohai Gulf migratory-bird World Heritage property on September 9. Chinese Egrets are leaving the Changshan Islands as migrating raptors reach the skies over Laotieshan; passage is expected to continue for about two months.

The report specifically names Crested Honey-buzzard, Chinese Sparrowhawk and Amur Falcon resting before crossing the sea, and describes the Changshan Islands as the world's largest natural breeding area for Chinese Egret. This explains the season; it is not permission to enter colonies or pursue birds.

Separating three raptors at distance

Crested Honey-buzzard is broad-winged and long-tailed, often gliding on relatively level wings, with highly variable plumage. Chinese Sparrowhawk is more compact with shorter, rounder wings and often alternates quick flaps with short glides. Amur Falcon is small and pointed-winged, agile and frequently takes insects in the air. Shape, proportions and flight style are safer clues than colour alone.

High and backlit birds are easily misidentified. Record approximate count, direction, time and weather first, then review photographs. 'Unidentified raptor' is more useful than a forced species claim.

Boundaries in a World Heritage property

Stay on roads, viewing platforms and public spaces allowed by the authority and verify current reserve and scenic-area access before travel. Do not cross barriers, approach islands, fly drones or chase low-flying birds by vehicle. Cancel or relocate in fog, strong winds, rough water, fire restrictions or temporary closures.

Migrating raptors depend on lift to conserve energy, while Chinese Egrets are leaving a sensitive breeding area. Use no playback, food or crowding. Share only a city- or heritage-component-level locality, never a dependable stopover point or patrol gap.
