Why a good intention is not enough

The birds in the report were confiscated by police and received three months of professional rehabilitation and pre-release training. Because Tianjin is outside their natural range, the rescue network coordinated release in suitable habitat with a local population in Suixian, Hubei.

Location, health, foraging, predator avoidance and population context all affect survival. An unplanned release in a park, forest or another region can cause death, disease spread or ecological harm.

First decide whether rescue is necessary

A fully feathered fledgling that can hop and has parents nearby usually should not be removed. Keep people, cats and dogs away and observe from distance. Active bleeding, a drooping wing, prolonged unresponsiveness after collision, entanglement or immediate road danger more clearly call for expert help.

Do not give milk or rice, force water, medicate, or display the bird in a transparent cage. Reduce light, noise and handling first.

What to tell a professional service

Tell local forestry, wildlife rescue or police the time, broad location, condition and hazard. One full-body photograph without flash may help triage. Never post a sensitive location publicly.

If instructed to hold the bird temporarily, use a ventilated cardboard box with clean soft cloth, quiet and appropriate temperature. Do not transport it long distance or choose a release site yourself. Qualified professionals should control release and follow-up monitoring.
