Chengdu Shifts from Bird Trading to Ecological Birding: Park Watching and Reporting Boundaries

The NFGA reported on September 14 that Chengdu regulates capture, transport, sale, keeping and outreach while promoting ecological birding through maps and public events. This article turns that policy into practical park, market and online guidance for visitors.

Five links in the official approach

Chengdu addresses capture, transport, sale, keeping and outreach as one chain. The September 14 NFGA report lists joint patrols, parcel checks, market supervision, a positive list for legal captive birds and public education, and says the city issues birding maps and holds ecological birding activities.

The enforcement figures are not a visitor directory of markets, rescued birds or patrol points. A birder contributes most by choosing public parks, refusing wild birds of unclear origin and passing verifiable evidence to the relevant authority.

Using an urban birding map correctly

An official map helps select public green space and understand habitat; it is not a live rarity locator. Check opening hours, paths, works, dogs and drone rules, then observe with binoculars from paths or platforms.

Urban birds may tolerate people, but interrupted feeding, repeated head-raising, detours or alarm calls still show stress. Do not surround a tree, block water, use playback or trim vegetation. Families and large groups should shorten time at one spot.

Responding to suspected illegal capture or trade

If you see a net, trap, caged bird of unclear origin or suspect parcel transport, do not dismantle, release, buy to 'rescue', or confront. Prioritize safety and note time, venue type, visible tools and vehicle details without exposing the victim birds' exact location.

Report to Chengdu forestry, police or market-regulation authorities and retain original images and notes. Online, do not expose personal data, unverified identities or live bird pins. A report supports enforcement; social-media discussion cannot replace professional action.
