Binzhou Records 56 Dalmatian Pelicans in One Survey: Verifying the Record, Identifying the Species and Avoiding Live-Site Chasing

Xinhua reported on September 30, citing Binzhou's natural-resources authority, that a monitoring team and the Shell Ridges and Wetlands National Nature Reserve recently recorded 56 Dalmatian Pelicans, a Class I nationally protected species and Binzhou's highest single-survey count. The monitored total rose from 15 in September 2024 and 25 in October 2025 to 56 this time. This guide explains the trend, long-range identification and stopover protection.

What 56 birds means—and does not mean

The official information confirms 56 Dalmatian Pelicans in one joint survey and describes it as Binzhou's highest single count on record. The 15 birds in 2024, 25 in 2025 and 56 in 2026 are observations from three different dates. They show an upward sequence in local monitoring, but do not by themselves prove national population growth or daily presence at one site.

The monitored position is conservation-management information, not visitor navigation. Use only reserve, wetland-park or local-authority notices for public access, booking, weather and transport. A social-media photograph is never permission to enter an unannounced area.

Identifying a Dalmatian Pelican at distance

The Dalmatian Pelican is enormous, with a very long bill and obvious throat pouch. Adults are mainly silvery white-grey with shaggy, curled hind-crown feathers; in flight it has broad wings, a short tail and a retracted neck. It differs strongly from common cormorants and herons, although juveniles, backlight and distance still require multiple field marks.

Record size, bill and pouch, wing shape, formation and feeding method, then review photographs. If the decisive features are unresolved, log an unidentified pelican rather than driving along the shore, walking onto a flat or approaching the flock.

Preventing disturbance to a resting flock

Use 8–10× binoculars or a spotting scope from a legal viewpoint. Collective head-raising, interrupted preening or feeding, swimming away or repeated takeoff all signal that observers are too close. Retreat immediately and keep later arrivals behind the same safe line.

Do not fly drones, honk, feed birds, block waterways or occupy a takeoff direction. Log only city- or reserve-level locality, strip coordinates from images and delay publication. Never reveal live aggregation, roosting or dependable feeding coordinates.
