Beidagang Records 50,000+ Migrants a Day and Shibalianwei Welcomes Spoonbills: Reading Autumn Monitoring

The National Forestry and Grassland Administration reported on October 3 that more than 50,000 migrant birds are currently observed each day at Tianjin's Beidagang Wetland, with the monitored total expected to exceed 300,000 in late October. Eurasian Spoonbills have also reached Shibalianwei Wetland in Hefei. This guide explains the counts, long-range identification and observation without chasing live flocks.

How to read 50,000 and 300,000

The official report describes protected-area monitoring: more than 50,000 migrants are currently observed per day at Beidagang, while the late-October seasonal total is expected to exceed 300,000. The first is a current daily monitored figure and the second a seasonal projection. Neither promises that a visitor can see that number from one platform or at one fixed point.

The report also describes smart cameras, infrared and acoustic monitoring, plus dynamic water-level management. These methods show why the figures depend on sustained monitoring and habitat management; a short personal checklist is not directly comparable with reserve statistics.

Start with three silhouettes in a mixed flock

A Eurasian Coot is dark-bodied with a white bill and frontal shield and often swims in groups on open water. A male Gadwall is finely grey-brown with a conspicuous black rear; females require caution and features including the white wing patch.

A Eurasian Spoonbill is large and pale with a long bill broadened like a spoon at the tip, often sweeping it side to side in shallows. In backlight, moult or extreme distance, record only the genus or group. Never drive along a shore or walk onto a flat to complete an identification.

Turn monitoring news into a low-impact visit

Use only announced entrances, paths and viewing facilities, checking access, booking, weather and transport before departure. Scanning from one place produces more comparable observations than chasing live pins from social media.

No drones, horns, feeding or barrier crossing. Collective head-raising, interrupted feeding, swimming away or repeated flushing means observers are too close: retreat immediately. Log only the reserve or city level, strip image location data and delay publication.
